Good looking, inexpensive and low powered.

I'm a fan of the way these speakers look but the downward pointing mid range units may turn some people off.

Altec Lansing VS-4121 2.1 computer speaker basics

The satellites are slim with two little dome/cone tweeters on the front but the base has a big bulge containing a loudspeaker pointing towards the desktop it is set on. This is a neat way of keeping the satellites slim, stabilizing them and ensuring mid-range sound is broadcast in all directions. The drawback of this design is that you will compromise the sound if you place them on a table with a cloth surface.

The controls (on/off, volume, high and low note adjustment) are all on the front of the right satellite and there is a headphone jack on the side.

With only 6 watts rms going to the two stereo speakers the Altec Lansing VS-4121 isn't really a stereo system substitute. However Combined with the sub woofer you actually get a very sweet sound that is definitely loud enough for computer based listening when you work.

Here are the specifications:

  • 2.1 system (2 stereo and subwoofer)
  • Standard RCA line input into subwoofer
  • Frequency response 20 Hz - 15 kHz
  • Bass amplification output 19 W
  • Satellite amplification output 2 X 6 W

The Altec Lansing VS-4121 looks good, sounds good

The bass response is very clear for a speaker in this price range. You'll be happy with the way your music sounds as long as your expectations are reasonable.

For the price you can't really go wrong, the speakers are compact and with the sub woofer under your desk you won't loose much desk space and will probably save some depending on the size of your current speaker system.
